Throwback Thursday: Honoring Marcy Cuevas as she prepares to leave WWAY
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This week’s Throwback Thursday takes a different approach, not just looking back at a collection of archived news stories, but at the career of someone who helped shape many of them.
The segment honors WWAY News Director Marcy Cuevas as she prepares to leave the station after nearly three decades of service.
Cuevas joined WWAY in 1999 as an editor before moving into reporting. In 2006, she became the station’s morning anchor, spending six years on the anchor desk covering major stories across southeastern North Carolina.
The segment features clips from her time anchoring Good Morning Carolina and reporting in the field, including some memorable moments from 2012.
That year also marked her first farewell to the station. Cuevas left the news business to stay home with her newborn daughter and toddler twin boys.
Her time away proved to be short-lived.
Cuevas returned to WWAY in 2013 as a part-time producer before coming back full time as managing editor in 2016. She was promoted to news director in 2020, leading the newsroom through the COVID-19 pandemic and the years that followed.
After six years as news director, Cuevas is leaving WWAY on Friday.
The entire WWAY News Team wishes Marcy well as she embarks on a new journey outside of the news business.
The segment is part of a weekly Throwback Thursday series that features stories from WWAY’s historical news archives. That archive can be accessed here.
