Tillis votes no on Lynch for attorney general

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — President Barack Obama’s nominee for attorney general is not getting support from her native North Carolina’s new senator.

Republican US Sen. Thom Tillis voted Thursday against the confirmation of Loretta Lynch in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Her nomination still cleared the committee by a 12-8 vote and goes to the full Senate.

In a news release before the vote, Tillis said it appears Lynch would represent little if any tangible policy difference from current Attorney General Eric Holder. Tillis says it also looks like Lynch would continue the Justice Department’s lawsuit against North Carolina over a 2013 election overhaul passed by the General Assembly while Tillis was state House speaker. That law requires photo identification to vote in 2016.

Lynch is a Greensboro native and current New York federal prosecutor.
