WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Officials are investigating after one child drowned in a backyard pool Sunday evening.

Linda Rawley Thompson with Wilmington Police Department says the call came in just after 5 p.m.

Officials responded to 302 Haig Drive in Wilmington where they say children were playing in the neighborhood and opened a gate to a neighbor’s backyard pool without the owner’s permission. A 2 and 1/2-year-old boy fell into the pool.

Thompson says neighbors performed CPR until emergency officials arrived. EMS tried to revive the boy but the attempts were unsuccessful.
