Could pro soccer return to Wilmington?
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — World Cup fever ended earlier this month. The Wilmington Hammerheads existence as a team ended last year.
The Hammerheads used to be one of the most successful United Soccer League teams, but the team ran into financial difficulty when it was sold in 2008 to Chuck Sullivan. Hammerheads coach David Irving is ready to revive the team if he can find enough local investors.
“2008 was the beginning of the end for the Hammerheads in a nutshell without getting into too much detail,” Irving said. “We survived 2008, and we continued in 2009, but it was very difficult.”
The entire interview with David Irving will air on WWAY on Sunday morning on the Coach’s Corner at 11:30am. The video that is currently posted on this website is just a small portion of Sunday’s interview.
