Topsail mayor says town, island dodged Earl’s bullet

TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Calm seas returned to Topsail Beach today, which helped kick off the holiday weekend. The dunes and beaches of Topsail Island managed to escape disaster from Hurricane Earl.

Topsail saw minimal beach erosion from the high swells yesterday. Today, surfers took advantage of the smaller waves and the calmer surf, while beach goers enjoyed the sunny weather.

Topsail Beach Mayor Howard Braxton said the town lucked out with what Earl brought.

“I got up early this morning and went out onto the beach and no damage whatsoever,” Braxton said. “It was great. Any damage we had anywhere was minor. We dodged the bullet this time, if that’s what you want to say. We were very fortunate.”

The mayor says Topsail is looking forward to a very busy and fun labor day weekend.
