Town council holds off votes on annexation for Lanvale Forest until November meeting

LELAND, NC (WWAY) – The Leland town council needs more time before they decide to annex the Lanvale Forest neighborhood. The developer of a phase there wants it to be in town limits, tonight they did not get a resolution.

Leland town leaders have had it on the agenda for some time, but neighbors are two for two so far to hold off an annexation until they get a guarantee their roads will be fixed.

“This is another thing biting us in the butt,” said town Mayor Brenda Bozeman.

The road to annexation has been well a bumpy one for Lanvale Forest.

“They are in severe disrepair,” said resident Chris Shipps referencing the neighborhood streets. “We cannot keep up with the amount of repairs that have to be done.”

The pre-recession subdivision has struggled since the initial developer left the project. The new developer wants to begin the next phase, but first annex it to the town of Leland. Town leaders are not ready to do that just yet.

“We need more time to look at all the issues related to this,” said town councilman Mike Callahan.

Issues neighbors, both for and against annexing the neighborhood, have weighed in on at several council meeting now.

“The only person that’s getting anything from this is the developer,” said resident Linda Dixon.

Neighbors are certain if the annexation happens, the lot ready to hold more than 45 homes will cause more truck traffic, hurting the already uneven, dilapidated streets.

“it does not seem prudent to put the needs of the individual ahead of two hundred plus future residents of Leland.”

The council will research the claims Brunswick county leaders refused to allow the phase three permitting before streets were fixed to state standards. They will address the issue of approving the developers annexation as well as another, town-initiated annexation of a different phase at their November 30th meeting.
