BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Leland getting some financial help in its efforts to be better prepared for natural disasters.

The Duke Energy Foundation has awarded the town a $25,000 grant to be used for upgrades to its land mobile radio system.

The system is designed to provide uninterrupted communication among first responders during disasters, like hurricanes…something that can frequently happen with traditional communication networks.

Officials with the Duke Energy Foundation and Town of Leland say the land mobile radio system would allow for improved coordination among emergency teams and faster response times.

“This enhancement will strengthen our resilience, enabling us to save lives, protect property, and provide timely information to the public,” Leland Emergency Management Chief John Grimes said. “We’re grateful for the Duke Energy Foundation’s support in helping us build a safer, more prepared community.”

The grant is part of the Duke Energy Foundation’s initiative to help North Carolina communities increase their resilience against major weather events and other natural disasters.
