SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Surf City has appointed William “Bill” Nas as the next chief of police for the Surf City Police Department following an extensive recruitment, evaluation and interview process, town officials announced.

Town Manager Kyle Breuer selected Nas to lead the department and continue its tradition of professional law enforcement and community-focused policing. Nas will officially begin his duties on Aug. 3, 2026. Officials said details regarding his formal swearing-in ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Nas brings more than 26 years of law enforcement experience with the Casselberry Police Department in Florida, where he currently serves as captain of the Support Services Bureau. Throughout his career, he has also overseen the Operations Bureau, giving him broad leadership experience in both administrative and field operations.

In addition to his law enforcement background, Nas holds a Juris Doctorate and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Florida Executive Development Seminar and the Florida Leadership Academy. Town officials said his credentials reflect a commitment to public service, innovation and leadership.

Nas succeeds Chief Phil Voorhees, whose tenure is credited with strengthening the Surf City Police Department’s operational capabilities, improving community relationships and maintaining a focus on public safety for residents and visitors.

“The Surf City Police Department plays a vital role in preserving the quality of life that residents and visitors enjoy,” said Town Manager Kyle Breuer. “Chief Voorhees leaves behind a strong foundation and a department that is well-positioned for continued success. Chief Nas distinguished himself throughout the selection process with his leadership experience, professional credentials and commitment to community-oriented policing.”

Mayor Teresa Batts also welcomed the appointment, emphasizing the importance of public safety in the coastal community.

“Public safety is one of the most important services we provide, and our Police Department plays a vital role in preserving the quality of life that makes Surf City such a special place to live, work and visit,” Batts said. “Chief Nas brings a wealth of leadership experience and a demonstrated commitment to professional, community-focused policing. I look forward to working with him as we continue building strong relationships between our police department and the community it serves. I would also like to thank Chief Voorhees for his years of dedicated service and the lasting impact he has made on Surf City.”

Nas said he is honored to take on the role and thanked both town leaders and outgoing Chief Voorhees.

“I am honored by the opportunity to serve as Surf City’s next chief of police and grateful for the trust placed in me,” Nas said. “I want to recognize Chief Voorhees for his outstanding leadership and the strong foundation he has built for the department. I look forward to working alongside our dedicated officers, town staff, residents and visitors as we continue to strengthen community partnerships and provide the highest level of service to Surf City.”

Town officials said Nas will lead the department as it continues its mission of protecting and serving the community.
