Town says algae blooms, not water treatment, causes numerous dead fish
WHITE LAKE, NC (WWAY) — The Town of White Lake says very high pH levels from algae blooms and not the alum treatment is what led to the large number of dead fish in the lake.
The state has temporarily suspended the alum application but the town says the state is not attributing the dead fish to the alum.
The town says the dead fish began appearing before the alum application began and a majority were found outside the area where alum was applied.
The town says algae blooms are controlling the lake system and last week, the pH reached levels of 9 and above which can be lethal to fish.
