Trees around Pender Co. courthouse will stay for now

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The large oak trees on the Pender County Courthouse Square in Burgaw will remain in place – for now.

The Pender County Commissioners met Monday and discussed the fate of the trees.

Many are old and hollow inside and pose a potential risk factor, for now the trees will be trimmed and left in place until after the annual blueberry festival in June.

They’ll start removing the mature trees in phases over a three-year period.

This summer they plan to take down eight trees on the northwest quadrant of the square and they’ll be replaced with six new trees.
