Trial to start in hospital shooting death

WHITEVILLE, NC (StarNewsOnline.com) — Opening statements are set to begin Wednesday afternoon in the murder trial of a Chadbourn man accused of gunning down his estranged wife in the parking lot of a Whiteville hospital in August 2011.

Elijah Jones, 68, is charged with first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle.

According to police, Jones and his wife Joan Everette had been separated two weeks when Jones followed Everette and her boyfriend to Columbus Regional Healthcare on Aug. 19, 2011. Jones confronted the couple as they sat in a parked car in the Jefferson Street parking lot in Whiteville, police said.
