Triplets say being an Azalea Belle is a big deal

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As another day of Azalea Festival festivities comes to an end, there is still a weekend full of events happening that include the Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Belles.

Two of them say this opportunity is a dream come true.

“It’s a big enough step to turn 18 and to be brought into that different world, but not only are you 18, it’s now you are eligible to be a belle,” Colleen Pecoraro said.

It’s an experience not many young ladies get to do.

“Growing up here we’d always see the belles lined up in these beautiful gowns made by these fantastic dressmakers,” Brittney Pecoraro said.

About 130 juniors and seniors in the Wilmington area get to wear these 1860s inspired dresses for the Azalea Festival.

“It’s something we really wanted to be a part of so we were really excited and honored to be a part of it,” Brittney said.

Brittney and Colleen are not only sisters, but triplets.

“We’re triplets, yes! So my brother is the oldest out of the three of us, and I’m the middle child, and then Colleen is the youngest,” Brittney said.

They say what they enjoy the most is sharing this big step together.

“We’ve always done stuff together first, so this is just another thing,” Colleen said.

This is an opportunity these ladies have been dreaming about since they were little.

“It’s really fun, because every girl wants to play dress up no matter what age they are,” Brittney said.

“This is dress up to the max,” Colleen said.

While they are among the lucky few, they think it’s something every girl should be able to be a part of.

“We are really making our mark on Wilmington, I guess you could say, before we leave,” Colleen said.

With graduation right around the corner, this is another milestone for Brittney and Colleen as they become adults.

“It’s just an iconic image of being mature,” Colleen said.

This weekend, Azalea Festival events include the parade, historic home tours and the street fair, among others.
