Trooper, deputy involved in shooting
The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into a shooting involving two law enforcement officers last night. Columbus County Sheriff Chris Batten tells WWAY it all started with a report of a stolen SUV south of Chadbourn on Highway 410.
Batten says some time after 7 p.m. one of his deputies and a state trooper stopped the vehicle, but the driver then rammed both officers’ cars and took off. Batten says in the process shots were fired and the suspect, a hispanic man, was hit. The officers chased the SUV, eventually stopping it again on NC 130 east of Whiteville.
Batten says the suspect is in the hospital in good condition. The SBI is now trying to figure out who fired and who hit the suspect.
