Truck carrying hazmat materials crashes, closes highway

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A busy highway in the Cape Fear region is back open after a crash involving a truck carrying hazardous materials.

A spokesman with the Wilmington Fire Department said their Regional Response Hazardous Materials Team responded to the crash on US 74/76 near Chadbourn at around 7:45 a.m. He said they received the call a tractor-trailer rolled over in the area. He said the scene was cleared by 11:00 a.m.

The WFD spokesman said the unidentified hazardous cargo was never released but crews on scene did clean up some diesel fuel that spilled due to the crash.

Trooper Nance with The Highway Patrol said the truck driver over-corrected and that’s what caused the crash. The driver was not injured.
