Truck driver wanted for bicyclist’s death arrested during traffic stop
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The man charged in the death of a Wilmington woman was arrested today during a traffic stop.
According to Major Gary McNeill with the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office, Jamar Cunningham, 24, was driving on I-95 in Dunn. A deputy pulled him over for an equipment violation. When the deputy ran his record, he saw Cunningham was facing charges in Wilmington. The deputy arrested him and brought him before a magistrate.
Wilmington Police announced on Friday, a few days after the crash, that they had secured warrants for Cunningham’s arrest. He is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
On May 15, Megan McClellan, 20, died while riding her bike near the Zaxby’s on 17th Street. In the 911 call, the truck driver repeatedly tells the operator he did not see her.
McClellan worked at the restaurant. According to friends and coworkers, McClellan was heading to the restaurant when the crash happened.
She had just gotten married in April.
Cunningham is out of jail under a $1,000 bond.
