Tuesday’s weather causes confusion at NHC courthouse

There was some confusion at the New Hanover County courthouse Wednesday morning. Tuesday’s snow closed it down, and some of those who missed their court appearances were not sure of what to.

The good news is, if you missed your appearance you won’t be penalized. The Clerk of Courts will be notifying every case that was canceled Tuesday by mail. Your court date will be rescheduled to the month of February or March.

It is important that the mailing address the court systems has for you is correct. That is where they will be sending your new court date.

The reason there was so much confusion Wednesday morning, is because everyone who missed their dates Tuesday, showed up today.

Tyler Manweller was one of the people who missed their court date and said, “It was freezing this morning, and we were all standing outside, and they wouldn’t let us in, and it was inconvenient.”

NHC Clerk of Courts, Brenda Tucker said, “We understand that it was an inconvenience, and we can’t control the weather, although sometimes we wish we could. No one will be penalized for yesterday. There will be no orders for arrest, no failures to appear, nobody will be called and failed.”

If you still have questions about your specific case you can call the Clerk of Courts at 910-341-1301.

The biggest confusion was early Wednesday morning, because the court was delayed until 10:00 a.m. By the afternoon, the confusion settled down a bit, and most understood what to do next.
