Two Columbus replica ships coming to Wilmington
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Nina and Pinta, two replicas of Christopher Columbus’s ships, will make a stop in the Port City next month.
According to The Columbus Foundation, the Pinta was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels.
Both the Nina and Pinta will be touring together as a ‘sailing museum’ to educate the public on the type of ship, the “caravel”, that Columbus used to discover a new world in 1492.
The Nina is an exact replica of the original. The Pinta was built 15 feet longer and 8 feet wider than the original to accommodate more people and to be used for charters and other events.
The Columbus Foundation says the ships travel an average of 10 months out of the year to 30 to 40 different locations across the United States.
The Nina last appeared in Wilmington more than ten years ago. Last summer, the El Galeon, a replica of a 16th century Spanish Galleon, docked in Wilmington for tours.
The Nina and Pinta are scheduled to dock at Port City Marina from May 12 – 21.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 60 and older and $6 for kids ages 5-16.
The ships will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
