Two schools to receive multi-million dollar expansion in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Overcrowding in schools is a problem throughout the Cape Fear. For staff at Town Creek Elementary, there isn’t a lot of space to work with students.

“You have to be creative with what you have and go into it with a positive attitude. but we are definitely in need of some space,” Town Creek Elementary School Principal Walker Constantinesco said.

To help address the problem, school leaders broke ground at both Lincoln and Town Creek Elementary Schools for brand new multi-million dollar projects.

The new buildings will create space for more classrooms, have updated technology, and landscape improvements. Many say they never imagined Brunswick County would boom like this.

“Being a Brunswick County resident and a product of Brunswick county schools myself, born and raised in Southport. I never imagined seeing Brunswick County the way it is now and it’s not a bad thing as long as its managed growth and we’re trying our best to do that,” school board chairman Charlie Miller said.

Constantinesco is looking forward to one thing when it’s complete.

“Room. Not having everybody on top of each other. If we have a teacher that wants to work with a small group of students or a teacher assistant, that they have a quiet space to be able to work. so we can meet the needs of all the kids,” Constantinesco said.

“If we can get more classrooms, we’ll have less trailers, mobile units. We just want kids to have a good safe learning environment and have the room that they need and the tools that they need to learn,” Miller said.

This also means the schools won’t have to keep turning kids away from attending their school.

Both projects are expected to finish by August of next year and will cost around $7.5 million. The money is from the bond voters approved in 2016.
