Two Brunswick County teens may face arson charges

Two teens in Brunswick County may face arson charges after starting five fires Thursday.

The first fire began around noon in Boiling Spring Lakes. Within three hours, fire fighters battled five fires, some involving trash.

Two boys, 15 and 16 years old, are the alleged fire starters. Police said the boys go to South Brunswick High School, and had been skipping school when the fires were started.

“These kids were probably just on their way home and a crazy thought gets into their head, and next thing you know we’ve got millions of dollars worth of equipment, man power and people risking their lives to stop forest fires,” said Chief Emmett Ballree of the Boiling Spring Lakes Police.

The investigation was turned over to the state forestry service, who could charge the teens with arson.
