U.S. Army Corps awards $4.3 million contract for Morehead City Inner Harbor dredging

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District has awarded a $4.3 million contract for maintenance dredging in the Morehead City Inner Harbor.

According to the agency, the contract was awarded July 30 to Curtin Maritime Corp. The project will remove shoaled sediment from navigation channels within Morehead City Harbor to help maintain safe and efficient vessel traffic.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said regular maintenance dredging is necessary to keep one of North Carolina’s major deepwater commercial ports open for maritime commerce.

Curtin Maritime Corp., based in Long Beach, California, will perform the work under the direction of the Wilmington District. Dredging operations are scheduled to coincide with regional environmental windows intended to reduce impacts on marine life and coastal habitats.

The Wilmington District said the project is intended to support commercial shipping, maritime industries and the regional economy by maintaining safe navigable waterways.
