UNC campuses adopt new textbook rules to lower costs for students

ASHEVILLE (AP) — University of North Carolina campuses are using new rules to help ease the cost of textbooks for students.

The UNC Board of Governors approved the new rules last March. Some campuses are now offering a book rental policy that guarantees students their main textbooks for a set price. Other campuses are offering to buy back books for introductory classes at a set price.

The board set a deadline to implement the new rules by this month.

UNC officials say book costs typically add $800 to $1,200 to a UNC system student’s annual bill.

The rules also force professors to pick textbooks before a deadline, allowing book stores time to shop around for the best price.
