UNCW chancellor asks city council to help fund track

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW Chancellor Zito Sartarelli presented a proposal for help funding the university’s track to city council morning.

Sartarelli said after the threat of removing track and field from UNCW, it became clear how important the track was not only to the school but to the community as well. He said this partnership would help to strengthen that bond.

“Living in the city is not just, how would I call it, sterile streets. The city is a living organism and the university is part of the city. And I think we have this symbiotic relationship with the city,” said Sartarelli.

The only concerns brought up during the meeting were parking and access by non-student community members.

The estimated cost of the project is between $1.2 and $1.5 million dollars. The university said that can be broken up over time as not all the repairs and improvements must be done at once.

Resurfacing the track is the most critical need. Other components of the project include upgrading landscaping and lighting and a restroom/field house facility.
