UNCW: Professor’s comments not tied to LGBT office leader’s resignation
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW says rumors about a conservative professor’s connection to the resignation of the head of the school’s LGBTQIA Resource Office are untrue.
A Change.org petition called “Save our Queer Professors” accused writings by Dr. Mike Adams against Amy Schlag as having led to her recent. resignation. WWAY first reported last week that campus sources said similar rumors and allegations were untrue. Today the university issues a joint statement with who it termed Schlag’s representative to try and put the rumors to rest.
“We appreciate all of the community’s interest, but we want to make it clear that Amy Schlag voluntarily resigned her position with UNCW to pursue other opportunities,” the statement read. “Her resignation has nothing to do with Professor Mike Adams or an issue with her beliefs. We ask that you honor her decision and respect her privacy and the privacy of her family at this time.”
Schlag is currently on paid leave until her resignation becomes effective May 7.
As of this afternoon, the Change.org petition supporting her was more than half way to its goal of 5,000 signatures.
