ONLY ON 3: UNCW Professor creates custom pens for his students

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW’s Dr. Kirk Brown is a busy man, directing the university’s athletic training program, but when he’s not inside the classroom, you can find him in his woodshop.

Brown taught himself how to make pens three years ago when he inherited his father’s woodshop and has been making them, daily, ever since.

“It really is a great sort of stress relief because now I just take all my day stuff and put it away and go in the shop,” Brown said.

Wood or acrylic, fountain or ballpoint, Brown said no two pens are the same. While Brown and his wife started a business selling his creations, he said his real passion lies in teaching and the students in his program. Each of his students not only get a diploma when they graduate, but they also receive a personalized pen designed, and made, by Brown.

“We work every day together for four years; my students will be getting almost 1200 clinical hours,” he said.

For all the hours spent in the workshop, Brown said it sets the stage for his students to write the next chapter of their lives.
