WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Sophomore Nick Feight, who leads the nation in runs batted in, and senior Ryan Foster, the nation’s winningest pitcher, were named pitcher and player of the year, respectively, by the Colonial Athletic Association baseball coaches on Tuesday.
Mark Scalf, who is in his 25th season at the lead of the program, earned his seventh Coach of the Year honor. Scalf opened the season by winning his 800th game and has qualified the Seahawks for the conference tournament in each of his seasons with the program.
UNCW, the regular season champions, placed 10 players on the all-conference squads, including five first-team picks including sophomore Brian Mims, junior Daniel Stack and senior Steven Linkous in addition to Feight and Foster. Foster shared Pitcher of the Year honors with Northeastern junior Aaron Civale.
Feight enters the conference tournament this week with a nation-leading 85 runs batted in along with a conference-leading 19 home runs. He also leads the conference in total bases (158) and slugging percentage (.763) and is tied for the lead with 22 doubles. Feight becomes the first UNCW player since Mark Carver in 2008 to earn the league’s Player of the Year award and the fifth overall.
Foster, who has tied the program record for wins in a season with 12, has made 14 starts and suffered just one loss on the season. The righthander ranks second in the league with a 2.41 earned run average and is third in opponent batting average at .225. Foster becomes the second Seahawk to earn the honor, joining Mat Batts, who was the league’s pitcher of the year in both 2013 and 2014.
Linkous, a senior, is one of three Seahawks to repeat as All-CAA honorees. Linkous has ignited the Seahawks offense all season, hitting a league-leading .384 and leading the nation in runs (70) and runs per game (1.35). The local product from Leland, N.C., has 29 stolen bases on the season and became UNCW’s all-time triples leader earlier this season.
Joining Linkous on the first team were Mims and Stack. Mims moved into the starting position at second base this season and has posted a career season, hitting .369 with 27 extra base hits, 65 runs scored and 53 driven in. In the field, Mims has committed just three errors in 259 total chances. Stack, meanwhile, also has moved into the starting lineup this season at third base and responded with career-highs in batting average (.286), slugging percentage (.503), home runs (10) and runs batted in (38).
Three Seahawks were named to the second-team with juniors Casey Golden and Gavin Stupienski repeating as second-team honorees and junior outfielder Robbie Thorburn earning his first All-CAA honor. Golden has appeared in 30 games this season and hit a career-high eight home runs while driving in 28 runs. Stupienski, who has hit a career-high 12 home runs, is hitting .341 entering the tournament and ranks second to Feight in RBI’s with 54, which also has him second in the conference. Thorburn moved to centerfield as a junior and responded with a career-high .367 while stealing 19 bases. The Raleigh, N.C., native also was named to the All-Academic team and is on the national ballot for CoSida Academic All-America honors.
Sophomore righthander Austin Magestro was named to the third team and rounds out the Seahawk award winners. Magestro has keyed the UNCW bullpen with a 4-3 record and two saves while striking out 59 batters in just 39.1 innings.
Freshman Alex Royalty was named to the All-Rookie team after going 7-2 during the regular season and striking out 53 in 66 innings.
UNCW’s five first-team selections were tied with the 2005 club for second most in the program’s history behind 2008’s six first-teamers. With 10 players earning All-CAA honors, this year’s team ranks second to the 12 that earned All-CAA honors in 2012.
