UNCW students host Walk in Her Shoes event

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you were on Chancellor’s Walk Wednesday at UNCW, you may have noticed some gentlemen wearing high heels. It was all for a good cause.

The Gamma Zeta Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity, in conjunction with the Gamma Kappa Chapter of the Phi Mu Society, hosted the second annual Walk in Her Shoes event.

Walk in Her Shoes took place on Chancellor’s Walk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event supports the Coastal Horizons Center in Wilmington and aims to raise awareness of sexual assault and assist those in crisis.

“We’re wearing some high heels to basically show support for women worldwide who have had domestic abuse or rape happen to them and we are raising money to give to the Coastal Horizons Rape Crisis Center here in Wilmington,” Chi Phi Fraternity member Ezra Wool said.

“Last year we ended up raising about 600 dollars and more importantly a lot of awareness,” Chi Phi Fraternity member Wyatt Janning said.

“We figured that fraternities should, a fraternity house should be the safest place for women, and unfortunately I think a lot of people have the idea that Greek life is not that,” Wool said. “And what we wanted to do is show that not just Greek life, but just to support women. That men can support women. Women can support women. And that in order to make this world a better place and a safer place for everyone we all have to support one another.”

A Chi Phi spokesperson said this year’s event raised $505.25 for the Coastal Horizons Center.
