UNCW students react to mandatory evacuation
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hurricane Matthew has people across the state preparing, even prompting UNCW to enforce a mandatory evacuation.
The last classes for the week finished at 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The university ordered a mandatory evacuation Tuesday demanding all students must be off campus no later than 12 p.m. Thursday.
But for some, especially international students, it is not so easy to pick up and leave. The school said they are providing a safe place to stay for students who have no where else to go. Some students have even stepped up and offered their off-campus homes to friends and classmates.
“I have a couple of my friends staying with me as well as my girlfriend. Hopefully everybody else will be safe, ” UNCW Senior Julian Morris said.
The schools will provide designated locations for students in need of a place to stay. Some employees will also host students who have nowhere to go.
As of right now the university has not released a time for students to return to class.
