UNCW students to see higher housing, meal costs

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline) — The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Board of Trustees approved a 3 percent increase to on-campus housing and an average increase of 2.9 percent to meal plan rates at its December meeting.

Traditional housing, meaning residence hall double rooms, increased by 2 percent — or $49 — last year. In the 2016-17 school year, those living in a residence hall double room will see a $76 increase per semester while those living in the Seahawk Village, Seahawk Landing or Seahawk Crossing apartments will see the biggest increase — $104.

We spoke with students about how they felt about the increases. Many said they felt college is already an expensive endeavor and more increases will only make it more difficult for students to attend.

“I just don’t think raising it is a good idea because people are going to be able to afford college less and then less people are going to want to go to college because of the expenses,” said freshman Kayla Dunlap.

“I think they should have asked the student body, like make a vote and see what the students wanted to do before they actually made a decision that effects everybody on campus,” said senior Deion Wells.

“There’s other sources of funds besides weeding more out from the students. They’re already conned out of a lot,” said freshman Daniel Rabinowitz.
