WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — The 22nd-ranked Seahawks host another ranked opponent on Tuesday when 10th-ranked UNC Chapel Hill visits the UNCW Soccer Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
UNCW (7-1-1) carries its longest winning streak, five games, since the 2008 season into the in-state battle with the Tar Heels (5-3) who have dropped their last two games following a 2-0 setback at top-ranked Notre Dame last weekend. The Seahawks stunned UNC last year in Chapel Hill, 1-0.
Tuesday will be #2KTuesday as UNCW looks to break the UNCW Soccer Stadium attendance record of 1,620 set against Duke in 2010. UNCW’s highest attendance mark this season was 897 against Ohio State and the Duke game drew 882. Through four home games, the Seahawks are averaging 749 fans per game.
In the first two media rankings released on Monday, the Seahawks are 22nd in both the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer rankings. The Tar Heels are 10th in the Top Drawer rankings and 11th in College Soccer News.
The NCAA also released its first RPI rankings of the season and the Seahawks are 20th. Aiding in the RPI ranking is UNCW’s 5-0 road record, which is tops in the nation.
Senior defender Jacob VanCompernolle was named to College Soccer News’ national team-of-the-week after scoring twice in UNCW’s win over then nationally-ranked Duke. VanCompernolle also helped an air tight defense against William & Mary as UNCW posted its third shutout of the season. He was also named CAA Player-of-the-Week for his efforts and became the third Seahawk to earn CAA honors this season, joining Jamie Dell (twice) and rookie Brayden Smith.
Mateo Cardona was the latest hero for the Seahawks after scoring the game-winner in the second overtime against William & Mary. Cardona’s strike, 1:25 into the second overtime period, gave UNCW a 1-0 victory in Williamsburg.
UNCW will have a quick turnaround this week following the UNC Chapel Hill game when it hosts another nationally-ranked side on October 4 when Delaware visits for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Both matches are slated to be streamed by the Seahawk Digital Network, weather permitting. You can access the network via UNCWsports.com.

GREENSBORO, NC (UNCW) -– The UNCW women’s golf team stands fifth overall following the opening two rounds of UNC Greensboro’s Forest Oaks Fall Classic played Monday at the rolling 6,267-yard course in the Gate City.
The 18-teams played 36 holes Monday and will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday in the final round of the 54-hole event.
The Seahawks opened their second appearance of the fall season with a 10-over-par 298 and were tied for second through the first 18 holes before carding a 23-over 311 in the second round to wind up the day 10 strokes out of the lead with a 33-over score of 609.
“I saw some really fantastic golf in the morning and we held it together in the second round,” said Cindy Ho, UNCW’s veteran coach. “We’re in a great position. If we come out tomorrow with a solid round, we have a chance to win. That’s all we can do. Everyone just needs to focus on their game and you never know.
“I was very proud of how we competed throughout the day, but especially in the first round. We started on some tough holes. The rough is long and the Bermuda is really thick. When it’s wet and thick, it makes driving accuracy a premium. On the holes that we played well, we managed it well and were able to get up and down.”
CAA newcomer Elon (599), Rollins (608), James Madison (608) and Maryland (608) are the only teams in front of the Seahawks heading into the final round.
UNCW junior Meghan Thiess is tied with Elon’s Emily Brooks for third place individually with a 70-75=145. Mercer’s Kelly Harris holds the lead with a 2-under par 142 (70-72=142) and Alexandra Papell of Maryland stands second at an even par 70-74=144.
Thiess showcased her hot putter in the morning round, reeling off four straight birdies at one point and “making everything she looked at,” said Ho. Thiess even chipped in from 20 yards out on the par 5, No. 11 hole in the string.
