UNCW trustees to discuss tuition hike
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW’s Board of Trustees will look at the possibility of again raising tuition and other campus fees when they meet next week.
According to agenda documents for the Dec. 9 meeting on campus, trustees will consider a 2-percent increase for in-state undergrads and 1-percent hike for undergrads from out of state. Graduate student tuition would go up 4 percent for in-state students and 7 percent for out-of-state, according to the request.
The plan would be for the 2017-18 academic year. It is projected to generate more than $1 million in revenue.
The money would be used for faculty and staff pay, graduate assistant stipend increases, strategic investments “that improve student outcomes,” financial aid and other costs.
If approved, it would mark the fifth tuition increase in the last six years at UNCW.
A committee is also recommending a $52,58 increase in student fees for full-time undergrads, including $25 more per year for athletics, $28.50 for health services, $2.80 for cultural events and $1.28 for education & technology. The current $5 per undergrad fee for “Westside Expansion Debt” would go away.
The plan requests a 3-percent increase in housing costs.
