UNCW women’s soccer team notches career win #200

GREENVILLE, NC (UNCW) — Senior midfielder Lindsey Byrne (W.A. Hough H.S./Charlotte, N.C.) scored two goals, including one in each half, as UNCW earned the 200th win in program history with a 2-0 victory over East Carolina at the Johnson Soccer Stadium on Thursday evening.

The Seahawks, who have won five consecutive games, upped their record to 6-3-0 on the season. East Carolina dropped to 4-4-1 on the season after having a three-game win streak snapped.

“This was a tremendous team victory tonight,” Coach Paul Cairney said. “From the back to the front, our whole team played hard and tough against a very good East Carolina team. East Carolina threw a lot at us and were unfortunate not to have a goal or two. Credit again goes to our backs and goalkeeper for coming up big at the right times and I am happy for Lindsey to find goals and move higher up the field.

“It was a great win against a very well-coached team that will keep winning a lot of games during the season,” Cairney added. “We are going to focus on Wake Forest now and get ready to face another ACC opponent on Sunday.”

Byrne gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when she took a pass from senior forward Maddie McCormick (Alexis I. DuPont H.S./Newark, Del.) and scored her second goal of the season.

In the 56th minute, Byrne extended the margin to 2-0 when she tallied an unassisted goal after collecting a loose ball and scoring on a low shot.

Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy (Lake Norman H.S./Huntersville, N.C.) made a season-high five saves en route to the shutout as East Carolina outshot the Seahawks by a 13-7 margin.
