UNCW celebrates 60 years of education

WILMINGTON — UNCW just celebrated a milestone birthday. Exactly 60 years ago Tuesday UNCW held its first class. Of course, it was known as Wilmington College back then.

The school marked the occasion on campus with speeches from university chancellor Rosemary DePaulo, current student body president Daniel Thorpe and Donald Blake, Wilmington College’s first student body president.

Blake said, “It’s kind of amazing, because I stand here and look around at all the buildings and all the people and my mind is doing a rerun of the days it took to make this all happen.”

UNCW has undergone tremendous growth in its 60 years and is still expanding.
