UNCW helps seniors with a fair that helps them stay active

Area seniors looking to stay active got some help from UNCW.

Graduate students studying the care of our elder population organized the event. While job opportunities were few at the fair, seniors had the chance to learn about ways to stay active. Attendees could participate in free aerobics and Nintendo Wii games.

Senior Fair organizer Lauren Segur said, “We have this baby boomer generation who’s reaching the adult age now – around 60, and we’re going to have the largest adult population that we’ve ever had. We need to accommodate them and show them what we have and learn ourselves what we need to do for them.”

According to the US Administration on Aging, in 2006 people ages 65 and older account for one out of every eight Americans; by 2030, that number is expected to double.
