UNCW to expand recreation center
WILMINGTON — UNCW has plans to expand its recreation center.
The plans call for adding 100,000 square feet to the facility. The facility is currently only 64,000 square feet, which university officials say is barely enough to accommodate half of its current student body.
Trustees approved spending up to $35 million the expansion.
Many students agree it’s time for an upgrade.
Sophomore Joseph Scholley said, “I was in here last week and I was trying to play some basketball. I had to wait over a good hour just to play basketball and I didn’t even come in here. If you came in here it’d be tough to find anywhere to work out.”
Since the state won’t fund the expansion, the students will have to foot the bill. Depending on how much it costs to build the center, students could have to pay more than $200 a year in additional activity fees.
