UNCW’s Denzel Ingram named CAA player of the week
WILMINGTON, NC (UNCWSPORTS.COM) — Senior guard Denzel Ingram launched the exhilarating game-winner in UNCW’s big road win at St. Bonaventure and on Monday was rewarded for his efforts by sharing the honor as the Colonial Athletic Association’s Men’s Basketball Player-of-the-Week.
Ingram, a 6-0, 175-pounder from Chapel Hill, N.C., led all scorers with 19 points in Olean, N.Y. and his stepback jumper on the left baseline gave the Seahawks their first win over an Atlantic-10 Conference opponent since early in the 2010-11 season.
Ingram went 7-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-11 behind the arc against the Bonnies. He also added five assists, three rebounds and one steal as UNCW improved to 5-1 away from Trask Coliseum this season.
Ingram currently ranks fourth on the team in scoring at 12.4 ppg and leads the club in assists with 6.3 dimes each contest. He leads the conference in assists.
It marks the 35th time overall a player from UNCW has been honored as CAA Player-of-the-Week and the second time this season. Sophomore Devontae Cacok collected the honor for the week of Nov. 21, 2016. Ingram shared the honor with senior forward Rodney Williams of Drexel, who poured in a career-high 29 points and ripped down 10 rebounds in Drexel’s narrow 72-71 loss to St. Joseph’s.
UNCW carries a five-game winning streak to Buies Creek, N.C., on Wednesday for its annual matchup with longtime rival Campbell. It’s the 102nd meeting between the Seahawks and Camels.
