Undocumented immigrants still banned from NC Community Colleges
Undocumented immigrants are still officially banned from North Carolina Community Colleges.
The State Board of Community Colleges met today to discuss the issue.
In the past few months they’ve gone back and forth. In November they made it mandatory to admit illegal immigrants. That decision was reversed in May and the ban was upheld today.
Students at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington had mixed reactions.
CFCC student Alexis Dominguez said, “I feel that education should be an open door, an open opportunity to anyone, and if they have a way to do that, I don’t think anyone should be able to close the door for them.”
CFCC student Don Harris said, “I believe you should be a legal citizen or have your green card, working, paying taxes just like all of us do to come to a state college.”
The ban is not necessarily permanent, but it will be in effect until the board comes up with a permanent policy.
