Union Elementary School to celebrate 75th anniversary

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY)– Union Elementary School will celebrate 75 years of serving Brunswick County students during a special anniversary event scheduled for Sept. 19.
The community celebration will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the school and will honor generations of students, educators, staff and families who have been part of Union’s history since it opened during the 1951-52 school year.
Originally established to serve Black students during segregation, Union graduated its final high school class in 1969. Following the integration of Brunswick County Schools in 1970, the school became Union Primary School, serving kindergarten through second-grade students. It transitioned to Union Elementary School during the 1994-95 school year.
School officials say the anniversary event will provide an opportunity for former students, current families and community members to reflect on the school’s legacy and its impact on the community over the past 75 years.
As part of the celebration, Union Elementary has launched a brick walkway fundraiser and distinguished alumni campaign. Supporters can purchase commemorative bricks for $50, which will become part of a permanent walkway honoring the school’s history.
“For 75 years, Union has been more than a school. It has been a place where generations of families have learned, grown and built lasting memories,” Principal Sam Jennings said. “This celebration gives our community a chance to honor that history while continuing to support the future of Union Elementary.”
Additional information about the anniversary celebration, brick fundraiser and alumni nominations will be released as the event approaches.
