Upcoming rugby tournament attracts international field to Wilmington

The upcoming 36th Annual Cape Fear Rugby 7’s tournament will have a slightly different feel this year now that rugby 7’s will become an Olympic sport in 2016. ( 7 meaning 7 players on a side ). Ray Funderburk is the tournament director. He told WWAY ” It’s an Olympic sport and if you come out you may see a future Olympian because we’ll have high level teams come here. We are acknowledged to be the best sevens tournament in the country.”

The national rugby team from Mexico will participate in Wilmington for the first time ever. More international teams are expected as entries are still coming in. There will be seven divisions in all ( 4 for men, 2 for women and a under 19 year old boys division ). NOVA is the defending champion on the men’s side and women’s side. NOVA is a rugby club loocated in Northern Virginia. Matches will be played at Ogden Park on July 3rd and 4th. There will likely be more than 100 matches played throughout the holiday weekend. The match schedule will not be made until early July.
