UPDATE: Camp Lejeune identifies Marine in Main Gate Shooting

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (WWAY) — Camp Lejeune officials have released the name of the Marine sentry killed at the Main Gate Tuesday.

They say Lance Cpl. Mark N. Boterf, 21, of Crawley, Texas, died
April 8 after receiving a single gunshot wound to the chest while on sentry
duty at Camp Lejeune’s Main Gate. He was assigned to 2nd Radio Battalion,
II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group aboard Camp Lejeune. He
was temporarily assigned to Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps
Base Camp Lejeune as a Marine sentry.

A spokesman says Boterf joined the Marine Corps in August 2012.
His awards include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National
Defense Service Medal.

Lance Cpl. Boterf has no deployment history.

Earlier today a Pentagon spokesman says the shooting at the base appears to have been an accident.

Department of Defense spokesman Army Col. Steven Warren told reporters Wednesday that indications point to a “negligent discharge” as the cause of Tuesday’s death in a guard shack at the main gate to Camp Lejeune.

Base spokesman Nat Fahy says it will take several weeks of examination to confirm that the shooting was accidental.

The Marine who fired the single shot from his M4 rifle about 5:30 p.m. remains in custody while the Naval Criminal Investigative Service reviews the incident. He hasn’t been publicly identified.
