UPDATE: More details in former UNC basketball player arrest
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Wrightsville Beach police have released more information regarding the Wednesday arrest of former Tar Heel, P.J. Hairston.
According to Wrightsville Beach Police Chief Dan House, a disturbance at Wings on Lumina Ave. was caused by 39-year-old Kevin Poteet Wednesday afternoon. As the store clerk called police, Poteet left in a black Cadillac Escalade.
The Escalade was stopped by Wrightsville Beach police, who ran the plates and noticed it belonged to 24-year-old P.J. Hairston. Police asked where the owner of the car was.
House says Hairston was on the beach off the Carolina Street access at the time of the traffic stop.
During the investigation, officers discovered Hairston had a warrant out of Orange County for harassing communication.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer said Hairston was booked in the county jail around 5:30 p.m. under a $1,000 unsecured bond.
House said Poteet was arrested for driving while impaired.
House also said both men were arrested without incident.
Hairston played for the Tar Heels from 2011 until 2013, when he was suspended. UNC announced that December he would not be reinstated.
The Miami Heat drafted Hairston in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft. He has since played for the Charlotte Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies. He spent the past season in the NBA Development League.
