UPDATE: Driver charged with DWI, four go to hospital after crash on US 421

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A driver has been charged with DWI after a four-car crash that shut down several lanes on US 421, causing big back-ups near the Isabel Holmes Bridge around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Troopers say the driver at fault is Maria Alaniz. They charged her with DWI and driving left of center. Troopers say preliminary testing showed Alaniz’s blood alcohol level was two times the legal limit. We’re told she was taken to the hospital for surgery, but there is no word on her condition yet.

Investigators say Rhonda Till, who was driving the first car hit, suffered a broken arm. It took 40 minutes to cut her out of her car.

We’re told two others drivers, Lyndon Allen and Juanita Richards, were taken to the hospital. Troopers say Richards was taken to the hospital by her husband. The condition of those drivers is not known.
