UPDATE: Lockdown lifted, road reopened after gas line break
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A lockdown has been lifted at Cape Fear Academy after a gas main break near the campus.
The break was reported shortly before 4 p.m. in the 3900 block of South College Road. Emergency crews have closed traffic in both directions as they work to stop the leaking gas.
Wilmington Fire Battalion Chief David Hines says they have a crew at the scene. He said it appears an eight-inch line ruptured, spewing natural gas into the air. He says Piedmont Gas is waiting on a clamp to arrive at the scene to help secure it. Hines says the gas is not a threat to students or others in the area.
Parents and employees were notified by automated phone alerts, email blasts and through the web.
S. College Road fully reopened around 8 P.M.
While more repairs are necessary, gas is no longer leaking.
Cape Fear Academy is set to resume a normal schedule Thursday.
