UPDATE: Police say shooting happened behind Wilmington church

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are investigating after they say several shots were heard by officers in the area just before they found a teenager with a gunshot wound on a street just a block from the scene.

Wilmington Police say just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers responding to a suspicious person call on Greendale Drive heard several gunshots nearby. Soon after, police say calls came in about the shots fired, along with alerts from gunfire picked up by ShotSpotter.

That’s when officers say they found a 15-year-old teenager at 418 Henry Street with a gunshot wound to the hip. Police learned that the shooting actually happened behind 443 Maides Avenue, which they say is where the House of God Church is located. The church is just one street over from where the teen was found wounded.

Police say several people were spotted running from the scene, but say officers do not have any suspect information. They say there was just one victim in the shooting, leaving the teen with what appears to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers say two homes on Henry Street were damaged by gunfire. This is the second shooting on that street since Sunday, when police say a man was shot in the upper leg nearby. WPD says CID is investigating.
