UPDATE: SBI investigates deputy-involved shooting in Castle Hayne
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The suspect in a deputy-involved shooting Friday faces charges now.
Darius Terrell Hester is charged with attempted 1st degree murder and assault with a weapon on a government official.
He is in the hospital after being shot by a New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputy Friday morning.
The State Bureau of Investigations has already taken over the investigation and was on scene for most of the afternoon. State investigators, though, are not saying much about what happened.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. Jason Augst says around 10:45 a.m. deputies got a call of an officer-involved shooting on Rockhill Road near Ruby Lane in Castle Hayne.
Witnesses say Hester, 23, was walking down the road before being shot.
Investigators are not saying yet whether or not Hester was armed, if he had any outstanding warrants or even why the deputy was trying to stop him.
“I was painting the windows on my house, and I saw this guy pass by,” neighbor Willard Garrett said. “About 30 seconds later I heard about seven or eight shots. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, and that was it. Thirty seconds after I heard the shot then I saw all the cops come.”
