UPDATE: Troubled Wilmington cemetery gets new leader

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A veteran cemetery worker is now handling operations at a troubled Wilmington graveyard.

The North Carolina Cemetery Commission says as of today Calvary Memorial Cemetery is now in the hands of Leonard Fulcher. He was appointed receiver of the cemetery last month after the commission ruled in July to seek a permanent injunction against the cemetery. No one from Calvary attended last month’s hearing where a judge granted a preliminary injunction and approved Fulcher as receiver.

The change came after families of people buried there have complained for years about neglect by owner Jack Krupicka.

Fulcher has more than 30 years of experience in the cemetery business, the Cemetery Commission says. He served on the commission for 12 years, including 10 as chair. He will now run the business, including day-to-day affairs and even try to find a buyer for the property.

Among Fulcher’s first jobs, is to clean up the cemetery, which has suffered from overgrown grass and weeds and piles of trash. He will also resume filing required reports to the commission and resolve any outstanding consumer complaints against the cemetery.
