Validated gang member sentenced on heroin charges
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A validated gang member has been sentenced to over five years in prison on heroin charges.
According to New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David, 25-year-old Rakeem Wilson pled guilty to attempted trafficking in heroin, possession with intent to sell heroin, conspiracy to sell heroin, and a probation violation. The Honorable John Nobles sentenced Wilson to 65-115 months in prison in New Hanover County Superior Court yesterday.
Officials say in 2015 a joint investigation of Wilson was launched by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Investigators were able to use a source to purchase 250 bags of heroin, worth $1,5000, from Wilson in the parking lot of a Wilmington business.
Assistant Attorney Timothy Severo says, “The ATF has been crucial in our office’s strategy to aggressively prosecute armed drug dealers and gang members. This case is another excellent example of the team work of local and federal agents working together to stem the tide of gangs in our community.”
The case was prosecuted by Timothy Severo and Wilson was defended by James “Buddy” Allard. The investigation was a joint effort by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics and Gang Unit and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
