‘Very unusual year’ for primaries

The outcome of the caucuses in Iowa mean a great deal for the presidential candidates, but what do they mean for us here in North Carolina?

The North Carolina primaries aren’t until May 6, 2008. Experts say nominees are often all but chosen by then and that late primary votes like ours generally aren’t as significant. But with tight races on both sides so far, UNCW political science Professor Roger Lowery says our late primary votes could have an impact this time around.

“This could be a very unusual year in that the primary and caucus contest will not produce a winner for one or even both parties,” Lowery said. “The contest may wind up going to the Republican or Democratic convention.”

The conventions aren’t until June and July. Lowery said it’s still very early in the race and the contest is still wide open.
