VFW members helping troops overseas

CALABASH — The holidays are a time to show others you care, and that’s just what a group of local veterans are doing for some of our troops serving overseas.

Members from the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Calabash are busying packing up donated supplies to send to troops in time for the holidays.

Thousands of pounds of non-perishable food items and hygiene products have been donated from the community.

Many members for the VFW say helping the troops hits close to home.

VFW member J.C. Peloquin said, “I actually have a son-in-law in Iraq right now, and so we’re constantly in contact with him. He says it’s such a moral booster for them to get things from back home, because they know people back home are enthusiastic and supporting them.”

The food and other American products such toothpaste and soap are expected to reach troops by the end of November and end up in the hands of soldiers serving from Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune.
