Volunteers help clean out flood victims’ homes

CALABASH, NC (WWAY) — Many people across the Cape Fear are dealing with the aftermath of the recent rains. For some that means taking care of a flooded out home. The NC Baptist Men is a group that is helping flood victims in Calabash. The group has a number of missions and that includes disaster relief and construction.

NC Baptist Men disaster relief volunteers were hard at work cleaning out a Calabash home Thursday.

Crew Chief Ed Coltrane says one home will take his crew of 6 volunteers two days to remove the drenched drywall, soiled furniture, and flooring.

“The most important problem that comes from flooding is the mold and mildew. You have to take all the material out that’s exposed to water,” said Coltrane.

This is a task Coltrane says they are definitely up for it.

“It creates a warm feeling not only are you helping physically by helping them on their property and homes but you’re helping them spiritually,” said Coltrane. “You’re helping them, praying with them.”

Team Leader Carroll Brown says helping with recovery is a big part of their mission and their relief efforts cross state lines.

“What we’ve been doing here is making assessment of the damage and what needs to happen, and to relieve the pain and suffering of the people that are in this area,” said Brown. “We’ve been to Texas, to New Jersey, we’ve been all over the place just doing God’s work.”

God’s work through the hands and hearts of his disciples that ask for nothing in return.

“You reap your rewards when you get into heaven later because you love Jesus and you want to share his love with others,” said Coltrane.

The NC Baptist Men is open to men, women and students. Volunteers tell us they have people in South Carolina working with flood victims as well.

NC Baptist Men is an auxiliary of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. If you would like to know more about the organization click here.
