Volunteers collect food for Street Turkeys of Wilmington event
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Seventh Annual Street Turkeys of Wilmington food drive kicked off Wednesday. The one-day food collection event had about 90 volunteers from Wrightsville United Methodist Church.
Volunteers collected food at four local Harris Teeter stores and dropped them off at The Landing in Wrightsville Beach. The food will go to local food banks.
Bill Traina, volunteer coordinator, said there is no better way to spend the day before Thanksgiving giving back to the community.
“It’s really uplifting. It’s uplifting to be at the stores to witness people coming out and leaving carts of food in one case or a dollar if that’s all they have no matter what it is, it just makes everyone feel good.”
Traina said on average six meals are collected per volunteer every two hours.
